Ashok Leyland
Ashok Leyland, the Hinduja Group flagship in India, is the second largest player in the Indian commercial vehicle market with a market share of 27%. The Company's main activity is to manufacture commercial vehicles and spare parts. The Company also specializes in manufacturing special purpose vehicles and engines for industrial, genset, marine requirements and other automobile spare parts.

A year after India's independence, in 1948, industrialist Raghunandan Saran founded Ashok Motors in Chennai, for the assembly of Austin cars. In 1955, British Leyland picked up an equity stake and the company's name was changed to Ashok Leyland. The company started manufacturing commercial vehicles in the same year. In 1987, the Hinduja Group and Iveco, the commercial vehicles arm of Fiat of Italy, gained a controlling stake in Ashok Leyland.

The company became the first Indian automobile company to receive ISO 9002 certification in 1993. The more comprehensive ISO 9001 certification came in 1994 and QS 9000 in 1998. All the Ashok Leyland vehicle manufacturing units received the ISO 14001 certification in 2002.

Served by its own comprehensive R&D base, complemented by collaborations with global technology leaders, Ashok Leyland has established a tradition of technological leadership and a strong reputation for product reliability. Ashok Leyland has technological collaborations with Hino Motors and the ZF Group.

The company's product range includes: Eighteen to 82-seater single and double decker buses, Vestibule buses, Haulage vehicles in capacities ranging from 7.5 to 49 tonnes, Diesel engines for industrial, marine and genset applications.

The Company can produce 77,000 vehicles and 87,000 engines annually from its six manufacturing locations at Chennai, Hosur (three plants), Alwar and Bhandara. Gross turnover of Ashok Leyland in 2005-06 crosses Rs.60 billion - a 25.8% growth over the 2004-05 turnover of Rs 48,108.01 million. Net profit rose 20.6% at Rs 3,273.20 million (Rs 2,714.10 million).

The Company's total sales volume reached 61,655 vehicles (54,740 vehicles) during 2005-06, a rise of 12.6%. In its main domain of M&HCV, it posted a 17.6% growth in the domestic market, whereas the total industry volume grew at 4.5%. International Operations have contributed 4,879 nos.

Bharat Earth Movers Limited
Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) is a premier ISO 9001-2000 Public Sector Undertaking of India engaged in manufacturing earthmoving and heavy industrial equipments. BEML is the second largest manufacturer of earth moving equipments in Asia and manufactures equipment that has important applications in diverse sectors like steel, power, mining, coal, cement, construction, irrigation, road building and railways.

BEML offers a wide range of equipments including:

Daewoo Motors

Matiz Car - Daewoo Motors India Limited is a part of the Korean multinational Daewoo Group with an annual turnover of US $ 65 billion and with a diversified presence in 123 countries. Its annual production capacity, worldwide, is over 1.7 million units. Its produces an entire range of automotive products including sedans, buses and trucks.

Despite the single largest investment in the Indian auto industry, Daewoo has not achieved the kind of success it had hoped to. The price slash boomeranged on it. It had an adverse affect on sales, raising questions regarding quality of the reduced price model.

Fiat India Pvt Ltd
Fiat SienaThe latest joint venture between the car giants, Fiat Auto of Italy and India's oldest automobile manufacturer, Premier Automobiles Ltd. (PAL) resulted in the formation of Fiat Automobiles Pvt. Ltd. which has manufacturing locations in 60 countries. This is a wholly Indian subsidiary of Fiat Auto in which Italy holds a 51% share and 49% is with PAL. It was hoped that this new venture would produce cars which give good performance, are beautiful and which would be suitable for Indian conditions.

Fiat's world car strategy, better known as Project 178, is to build family vehicles on the same platform, conceived for the emerging markets. The 178 project allows a variety of body shapes to cater to diverse market requirements across the world. The five body styles include a three and five-door hatchback (Palio), a station wagon (Palio Weekend), a three-box saloon (Sienna), a van and a pick-up.

Fiat's plan to manufacture the 178 family in India centered on the construction of its 'integrated factory' that is a part of the industrialization package that comes with the 178 project. The factory is being built at Ranjangaon, 30 km from Pune. It is modeled on Fiat's state - of - the art, integrated plant at Cordoba, Argentina.

General Motors
Opel Astra - General Motors is the worldwide leader in car manufacturING, with a 17% share in the world auto market. Its products are sold in over 170 countries, and its manufacturing base is spread across 43 countries and its annual production is roughly 83 lakh vehicles.

It manufactures a variety of vehicles: the Chevrolet, Pontaic, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Opel, Saturn, Geo, Vauxhall, Holden and many more.At the forefront of technological innovations in the automotive sector, General Motors, since its inception in 1908, has always stood a shade above the rest. In 1911, it introduced the electric self-starter, in 1933, developed the front wheel suspension, called the Knee - Action.

It initiated the installation of the industry's first catalytic converters in all cars sold in the US in 1975 and in 1996 delivered the first electric vehicle, the GM EV1, to consumers. The latest is the production of the EVJ, an electric passenger vehicle.

Its tryst with India began in 1928, with the assemblage of Chevrolets in 1928. Till its closure in 1954, it assembled trucks, buses and batteries both for the Indian and export market. It has since then been in the Indian market as part of tie-ups with the Hindustan Motors to produce Bedford trucks, Vauxhall cars, Allison transmission and off-highway equipment.

General Motors India was formed in 1994 as a result of collaboration between General Motors Corporation and C.K. Birla Group of Companies. Its total investment is to the tune of Rs. 300 crores, roughly equal to 100 million dollars and its Manufacturing Plant is located at Halol, 40 km north of Vadodara in Gujarat. GM India has brought the latest manufacturing processes and human factor practices to its Halol Plant and therefore is the benchmark for advanced technologies in the Indian automotive industry.

GM's operations in India combines Indian ingenuity, American management know-how and German engineering to produce premium automobiles in a world class manufacturing environment. The Opel Astra that GM India is producing is Opel's best selling model worldwide and the third best selling car ever produced.

Hindustan Motors
Contessa - Hindustan Motors was the first Indian Car Company to start production In India in 1942. Since then, it has become a vast company, manufacturing cars like the sturdy Ambassador, the elegant Contessa, and in collaboration with Mitsubishi of Japan now manufactures the new Mitsubishi Lancer.

It started production of the Landmaster in 1954, and in 1957 began the production of the Ambassador. Later tie-ups with General Motors Corporation of USA, Vauxhall Motors, UK, Marion Power Shovel Co, USA led to new products being launched. In 1963 commenced the production of the Ambassador Mark 2. Later versions and more forays in related vehicle segments followed.

At present, it is a one billion turnover company manufacturing Passenger Cars, Utility Vehicles, Power Products and Earthmoving Equipment. The manufacturing facilities of the company are spread across India: Uttarpara in West Bengal, Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh, Thiruvallur and Hosur in Tamil Nadu, and Pondicherry. The latest model, Mitsubishi Lancer, is manufactured in their state - of - the - art manufacturing facility at Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu.

Increasing rivalry and dropping sales figures made the company look out for newer models, and hence the new Ambassador Nova was brought out in 1990, and in 1993 was launched the Ambassador 1800 ISZ.

Though the sturdy Ambassador does not find many takers in India, with people looking to more fancy cars, its export has been steadily increasing, mainly in the British and Japanese markets. Trucks are being exported to Bangladesh, Egypt, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Mauritius. The Earth moving Equipments are being exported to Oman, Jordan, Iraq, Bangladesh, Mauritius and Libya.

Hindustan Ambassador has a vast service network. The Passenger Car and Utility Vehicle market is being attended by a 115 strong dealer network, 50 Service and Parts dealers and additional 60 exclusive Parts dealers. 4 Regional Offices and Nation-wide Territory Offices support it. Two dealers serve the Earthmoving Equipment and Power Products market from 25 locations spread across the country.

In a bid to streamline the after sales service, three divisions have been made, namely red, blue and green. The Red will handle the new Mitsubishi Lancer, Blue, the Ambassador and Contessa Classic, while the Green caters to the rural market with the Trekker and the HM RTV.

All the cars manufactured by Hindustan Motors conform to Euro - 1emission norms. This has been achieved by the upgrading of the Ambassador 1800 ISZ with multi - point fuel injection. The Ambassador was always in conformance with these norms.

Maruti Udyog Ltd

Maruti Esteem December 1983 heralded a revolution in the Indian car industry. Maruti collaborated with Suzuki of Japan to produce the first affordable car for the average Indian. At this time, the Indian car market had stagnated at a volume of 30,000 to 40,000 cars for the decade ending 1983. This was from where Maruti took over.




The sales figure for the year 1993 reached up to 1,96,820. The company reached a total production of one million vehicles in March 1994 becoming the first Indian Company to cross this milestone. It crossed the two million mark in 1997.

Maruti EsteemIndia's largest automobile company, Maruti entered the Indian car market with the avowed aim to provide high quality, fuel - efficient, low - cost vehicles. Bajaj Auto Ltd.
It is one of India's top ten companies in terms of market capitalization and among the top five in terms of annual turnover.Established in 1945, it was incorporated as a trading company. From 1948 till 1959, it imported scooters and three wheelers from Italy and sold them in India. It then obtained a production license in 1959 and struck a technical collaboration with Piaggio of Italy in 1960.

Scooter production commenced in 1961. Three wheeler production followed in 1962. Its collaboration with Piaggio expired in 1971 and since then the Company's scooters and three wheelers are sold under the "Bajaj" brand name.

Under the "Horizontal transfer of technology" policy, Maharashtra Scooters Ltd., a Company with 24% equity participation by the Company and 27% participation from Maharashtra State Government's Western Maharashtra Development Corp. was formed in 1975. Production facilities are located at Satara, in Maharashtra State. This helped augment production capacities. The unit continues to assemble scooters from CKDs supplied by the Company. These scooters are marketed through the Company's distribution network and under the Company's brand name.

The Company's second plant was set up in 1984 at Aurangabad, in Maharashtra State. In this plant, scooter production commenced in 1986; three wheeler production commenced in 1987; and scooterettes and motorcycle facilities were commissioned in 1990 & 1991 respectively.

From 1961 when the annual production was about 4000 units, today the Company has become a market leader with annual production in excess of 1.35 million units and with product offerings in all segments (mopeds & scooterettes, scooters, motorcycles, three wheelers).

One of India's premier automobile companies, it was established in 1945 to manufacture steam locomotives. A tie-up with Daimler-Benz to produce commercial vehicles lasted from 1954 to 1969, by when Telco was in a position to independently design and manufacture commercial vehicles. It ventured into the production of other engineering equipment before it finally settled down to automobile and construction equipment machinery.TATA - Indica

Tata has entered into several collaborations with different companies. Tata Cummins Ltd. is a 50:50 venture with Cummins Engine Company, USA for the manufacture of fuel-efficient, low emission, environment-friendly diesel engines. A joint venture with Daimler Benz/ Mercedes Benz A.G. produces the 'E-Class' Mercedes Passenger Cars and it is also in collaboration with Holset Engineering Company, U.K. for turbo chargers to be used in the diesel engines manufactured by Tata Cummins Ltd. and other OEMs.

The only Indian company which is equipped with crash testing facilities, servicing is never a problem with its vehicles. Service set-ups exist at every 100 kms at national highways. Besides there are 450 Service Centers across India, 24 hour ATM (Any Time Mobile) centers in Mumbai and Ahmedabad and fully functional Customer Training Cells in the Service Centers to help the customers make the best use of their vehicles.

Telco manufactures some of the most favorite vehicles of all times. Its Tata Safari, Tata Estate, Tata Mobile, Tata Sierra, and the trucks and buses manufactured by it are very popular. The challenge before Telco now is to make its newly introduced passenger car 'Indica', as popular as its other models.

Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)
The apex national association representing Auto Industry was incorporated as AIAM, 39 years ago. Over the years, apart from protecting and promoting the interest of the Automobile Industry, the Association has aquired a social face, with increasing emphasis on environment and safety related issues.

Keeping pace with the changing needs and in order to facilitate greater flexibility in operation, a society, namely, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) was formed in May 1998. All the companies who were the members of AIAM has become members of SIAM. In addition 3 new companies have also taken SIAM membership.In the beginning SIAM will carry on part of the responsibilities of AIAM and then gradually all the safety related activities of AIAM will be handed to SIAM.

SIAM is an important channel of communication for the Automobile Industry with the Government and National and International organisations. In keeping with the liberalised economic environment, the Society is committed to playing a proactive role in all issues of relevance to the Industry.

The Society also aims to play a pro-active role in creating awareness on important matters like Road Safety and Environment Protection. SIAM will organise, biennially, the Auto Expo series of Trade Fairs in co-operation with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Automotive Component Manufactures Association of India (ACMA).

SIAM is committed to the advancement of vehicular technology in India, which would ensure that the products are environment friendly, with enmhanced safety features, are cost effective and provide mobility to an increasing number of people.

The Indian Automobile Industry has an agenda for the future and SIAM hopes to be a catalyst in its endeavour to create an internationally competitive Automobile Industry and enhance the role of the industry as a responsible corporate citizen.
